Master of Public Health (Honours) - MPH(Hons)

Overview

The Master of Public Health (Honours) (MPH(Hons)) program allows you to extend your MPH coursework degree with a research project in an area of interest to you. The research component of this program is done in the form of a 12 credit point dissertation (in addition to the 48 credit points of coursework for the MPH).

Course content

The MPH(Hons) program includes the completion of a research dissertation, which usually involves quantitative and/or qualitative analysis of a public health problem or intervention. The dissertation gives you an opportunity to produce a written piece of research, which is supervised by an academic member of staff. The aim is for you to apply the knowledge and skills developed in your coursework to a particular topic or problem in public health.

For further details on what is required for a dissertation see the Dissertation guide. A guide for the production of a thesis may be found on the SUPRA website.

Qualifying for Honours

To be eligible for Honours, you need to:

  • already be enrolled in the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree,
  • have achieved a weighted average mark (WAM) of at least 70% in the first 24 credit points of coursework, and
  • maintain this average grade throughout the coursework component of the MPH degree (48 credit points)

NOTE - If you fail to achieve the 70% mark for all credit points you may complete the dissertation but will not be awarded an Honours degree.

Course structure

Students intending on enrolling in the MPH(Hons) program must first complete 48 credit points in accordance with the course requirements of the MPH program.

In addition, you must enrol in a 12 credit point research dissertation unit of study - PUBH5908.

Enrolment for Honours requires a minimum of one semester. As a general guide, the dissertation would be completed in three months (or six months part-time). If you do not complete your dissertation in one semester, you will have to re-enrol for the dissertation in the subsequent semester.

Please note that you will be financially liable for the equivalent of 12 credit points for each semester of enrolment.

The table below summarises the course structure and requirements for the MPH(Hons) program. NOTE - this table is based on enrolment as a full-time student.
