Scholarships are offered to assist with general living costs.
Students can apply for scholarships:
- before they start their research candidature,
- after 6 months,
- after 18 months.
Scholarships can be for 1, 2 or 3 years.
While each scholarship has its own set of eligibility criteria, at the very minimum, most require that applicants:
- be Australian citizens or permanent residents, and
- be undertaking a full-time research degree, and
- have completed a Bachelor Degree with first class honours or equivalent results, or
- have an outstanding record of research achievements
Read and address the criteria. Students should read the criteria of each scholarship carefully before submitting their applications.
Scholarship opportunities available to School of Public Health research students include:
Australian Postgraduate Awards (APAs) and University Postgraduate (UPAs)
Awarded to students of exceptional research potential to undertake a higher degree by research. (For example; attained an Honours 1 degree or equivalent plus completed a Masters by research degree or have published research)

National Health and Medicine Research Council (NHMRC) Scholarships and Awards
A variety of scholarships for medical, dental, biomedical and public health masters or PhD degree students.
Awarded to students of exceptional academic achievement (Honours 1 degree or equivalent) and an outstanding record of research achievements (e.g. direct research experience, publications etc).
Funding is also available for Aboriginal health research and research into HIV/AIDS.
Scholarships are valued between $18,000 and $28,000 per annum depending on the field of study and qualifications, and are tenable for up to three years for PhD candidates and one or two years for Masters candidates.
Applications must be submitted through Research Office. (Intending applicants should contact Research Office in May of each year).

The Federal Government's Research Training Scheme (RTS) provides HECS exemptions for Commonwealth-funded higher degree students for the duration of an accredited higher degree course, up to a maximum period of four years of full-time equivalent study for a doctorate by research and up to two years of full-time equivalent study for a master's by research candidature. In 2008, fees for research degrees in the School of Public Health are as follows:
Doctor of Philosophy:
Australian (local) students Local students are exempt from paying fees under the Research Training Scheme for 8 full-time or 16 part-time semesters.
International students
Doctor of Public Health:
Australian (local) students Master of Public Health or equivalent may be undertaken at the reduced fee.
The 2008 reduced fee is $151.25 per credit point.
Therefore, total fee = $151.25 x number of credit points.
Research component (second and third years) free due to Research Training Scheme exemption for local students of 8 semesters FT or 16 semesters PT.
International students
Master of Philosophy:
Australian (local) students - free due to Research Training Scheme exemption for 4 semesters FT or 8 semesters PT
