Chronic Kidney Disease

Researchers at the Sydney School of Public Health, University of Sydney are involved in an ongoing collaboration examining the economic aspects of chronic kidney disease, in conjunction with researchers from The George Institute for International Health, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, NHMRC Centre for Clinical Research Excellence in Renal Medicine, Children’s Hospital at Westmead and the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry.

This collaboration has been involved in a number of policy relevant analyses, including a study for Kidney Health Australia of the economic impact of kidney disease in Australia, including analyses of the costs of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) treatment, the cost-effectiveness of changing ESKD treatment and organ donation practices, and the cost effectiveness of screening and optimal management of CKD risk factors. Other collaborative projects include development of a Statewide Renal Health Services Plan for Queensland Health, economic evaluations of interventions in renal transplant recipients, projects examining patient and carer preferences for dialysis modality, community preferences for organ donation and allocation, and ongoing economic evaluations conducted alongside clinical trials.
