Computers Part 1: Changing the way we learn, live, communicate and treat (.swf rich media)
Dr Tony Delamothe
Editor, BMJ.com

Computers have already had a transformative effect on science by providing easy online access to most important scientific resources; and by allowing different sorts of conversations to take place. These will radically change the way science is done.

Computing lies at the heart of sorting out the relationship between our genetic makeup and environmental conditions, and human disease.

Computers have become so important that they're virtually invisible -yet they lie at the heart of several medical milestones: genetics, evidence based medicine, medical imaging, all of which have received their own place in this very lecture series.

Prof Micheal Kidd

Computers Part 2: Changing the way we learn, live, communicate and treat (.swf rich media)
Professor Michael Kidd, Head of Discipline
Discipline of General Practice, University of Sydney

Australian general practice has embraced the use of computers to support improvements in the safety and quality of care provided to our patients. Michael’s research has shown that by the end of 2005, over 90% of Australia's GPs were using computers for prescribing and over 50% for clinical records.

Recently, Australian governments have made a decision that we will be a “Fast Follower” nation in health IT. Rather than investing heavily in the development and testing of our own clinical systems, we are watching progress in other countries and delaying decisions on the investment we will eventually need to make to implement our own national electronic health record system.
